OAT Israel: Safed and Kibbutz Kfar Haruv (Carob)

Safed is 2,953 ft above sea level and the highest city in Israel.  It is the center of Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism. We enjoyed strolling the picturesque streets, admiring art galleries, lunching at a popular restaurant and visiting the Synagogue ABUHAV.

Kibbutz Kfar Haruv was founded in 1973 in the Golan Heights across the Sea of Galilee from Tiberius and very close to Syria.  We stayed in the exceptional accomodations for tourists called "Peace Vista." After dinner, a family told us about the idealistic early days of the kibbutz and the current and more pragmatic privatization model.
